Companies looking to reduce the legal liability caused by the premature destruction of records can now take advantage of 80-20 Retention Server, launched today by 80-20 Software. Retention Server is designed to manage the retention lifecycle of electronic documents and emails, to make storing, searching, tracking and retrieving information more efficient and reliable. It is available free of charge to users of Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services.
Legislation like the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, E-Sign and HIPAA mean most businesses are now required to keep business records for defined time periods and be able to produce them on request to a Government regulator or a Court. Retention Server’s electronic document retention capability is a foundation to the implementation of comprehensive corporate governance and compliance programs for enterprises using Windows SharePoint Services.
“Reducing the potential liability to regulators is a goal all businesses without exception will want to achieve,” said Rob Gray Portals Manager at Microsoft UK. “Retention Server, alongside Windows SharePoint Services can play an essential role and reduce legal costs created in finding records and responding to litigation or regulatory requests.”
Unlike other retention lifecycle management technologies, Retention Server stores the metadata and object entirely within the database. This makes the server more reliable, scalable and compatible with Windows SharePoint Server.
Commenting on the server’s design, Mark Harrison, Architectural Systems Engineer, Microsoft UK said: “I have been involved in testing this product since the earliest private beta. I am particularly pleased to see that during the beta of this product, 80-20 listened carefully to the SharePoint community and have incorporated additional features in response to their feedback.”
Retention Server ships with an API so other software vendors have the opportunity to create applications on top. It also integrates with SharePoint’s search capabilities, so users can search across SharePoint document stores, as well as records stored in Retention Server.
